Cathedral of Ruins

Cathedral of Ruins is our homage to the abandoned grandeur of City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana. Smoldering Frankincense, the savor of sacred ritual, forms the centerpiece of the scent, surrounded by cool Cypress, sharp Black Peppercorn, and a grace of Rose Oil. Golden Saffron and resinous Peru Balsam deepen the heart, while Leathered Woods anchor the base. The resulting fragrance is solemn, shadowed, and quietly striking.

Our Inspiration

Built in 1926 with support from U.S. Steel, City Methodist Church was once one of the grandest churches in the Midwest. When Gary's steel economy declined, the congregation dwindled and the church closed in 1975. Today, with its roof largely gone, its Gothic stone walls stand open to the sky. Everything about it was built to last. Nature took no notice. Season by season, rain, frost, and wind have worked on the stone, and in the light that now falls where a ceiling used to be, the ruin has become beautiful in a way that lies outside the imagination of its builders.
